FAQ’s - HypnoBirthing and Calmer Birth
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a naturally-induced state of relaxed concentration – a state of mind and body in which we can communicate suggestions to our unconscious mind. This part of our mind influences what we think, how we feel, and the choices we make.
Will I be asleep or in a trance?
No, using self hypnosis doesn't mean you'll be in a trance or a sleep. Rather, you'll be able to chat, be totally relaxed, but fully in control. You'll always be aware of what is happening. You will be aware of your body’s contractions, but will be able to determine the extent to which you feel the surge. You will experience your birthing in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation, without the fear and tension that cause pain. When your baby is born, you will be fully awake and involved.
Why is hypnosis in birth so good?
It offers a different approach to childbirth that is not covered in most antenatal classes. This includes:
Breathing techniques that actually help the birth
How to massively reduce the need for any medication
How to reduce your risk of tearing or needing an episiotomy during birth
How to be confident and informed when dealing with the medical staff
How to release any fears you might have about childbirth
You'll know how to relax and stay calm and in control
What other benefits are there?
Considerably shorter labours
High number of comfortable, natural births with no technological assistance
A high rate of success in assisting breech-presented babies
Feeling energized and in good spirits following births
Being able to confidently approaching a safe, easier and more comfortable natural birth.
Can you guarantee a completely pain-free labour and birth?
No. There are many factors that can affect a birth, some of which are outside our control. The success of the techniques is related to the amount of practice you put in.
We find that around 65-70% of HypnoBirthing® mums don't need any form of pain relief. Remember - the aim of HypnoBirthing® is not a completely pain-free and picture-perfect 'natural' birth. It is to have a calmer, easier, more comfortable birth - where you are in control, the way that most mirrors Nature.
Does it help the baby?
Yes. HypnoBirthing® babies tend to be calmer, feed better, sleep better and experience less trauma, because they are gently and calmly breathed into the world at their own pace.
Will my birth partner be involved?
Yes, they become a central part of the birthing process, helping you stay calm and focused.
When should I start the classes?
Somewhere between 20-33 weeks is ideal, as the success of the course is strongly linked to how much practice you do. However, provided you can finish the course before you give birth, it's still very effective.
Does my partner/husband have to attend the classes?
Birthing partners are a very important part of HypnoBirthing® success. However, if your partner cannot attend all the classes and/or help you practice or attend the birth, your mother, sister or friend can also be your birthing partner or you are welcome to attend alone.
Is the Calmer Birth Express Workshop the same as the HypnoBirthing but in one day?
No, the one day express workshop is very different. The Calmer Birth Express Workshop has been devised to teach you valuable techniques for birth in just one day. These techniques with practice help you in having the birth you desire. This does not cover the same as the HypnoBirthing Course.
The Calmer Birth Express Workshop is a great alternative for anyone who cannot commit themselves or does not wish to complete the full HypnoBirthing Course. It is also useful as a refresher course if you have used HypnoBirthing in the past. The Calmer Birth Workshop is an alternative NOT a substitute for a full HypnoBirthing Course.
